The curious cleric

What was the Scottish Highlands like in the century before the Battle of Culloden?

Professor David Worthington will focus on Scottish Highland history in the century before the Battle of Culloden in 1746. He will interrogate the life-writing of the Rev. James Fraser (1634-1709) of Kirkhill, a Gaelic-speaking scholar, traveller and minister. Through this example, the talk will illuminate the scholarly dynamism and agency of the people of the Highlands. The entire period between 1493 and 1746 can still appear enigmatic in the region’s history, however, this talk will highlight a different side to the north of mainland Scotland during Fraser’s lifetime.
